NAHQ is on a fantastic journey, and I am so excited about the greater recognition this will bring to our profession. And, NAHQ continues to make process improvements with you in mind.
Sandra Jones installed as President-Elect, Marian Savage as Secretary/Treasurer, Cheri Graham-Clark and Maria Shirey as Directors-at-Large on the 2018 NAHQ Board.
You worked hard to maintain the credibility gained through the CPHQ and we appreciate your continued commitment to the profession of healthcare quality!
A new year represents new opportunities to better ourselves as healthcare quality professionals and for our organizations to improve healthcare quality for those we serve. It’s no different for NAHQ, which looks for ways to improve the profession and thus the organization.
More than 100 million specialist referrals are requested in the US each year in ambulatory settings, yet only half of these are completed. Among those that are incomplete, there are multiple process errors, including missing information and communication failure. Such breakdowns in the referral process can lead to delays in diagnosis and treatment.
What a wonderful time of year! A time to reflect personally and professionally. I hope each of you will do so, as well. Find time to relax and enjoy the warmth of relationships made, your family and friends, and the new skills and learnings obtained along the way. Perhaps think about growth or a new career move you anticipate in the coming year. Working in healthcare, we see and experience change every day. Make it a goal to take advantage of opportunities brought about by these changes.
2017 has been a spectacular year! It’s hard to believe it’s nearly over.
At my facility, one of my responsibilities includes mapping out the training path for my healthcare quality & safety team. I know many of you are in the same position. If you’re in a managerial role or looking for professional development opportunities that will help you further advance your career, remember that NAHQ is here as your professional home.

October Message from Leadership
What an incredible time we had at NAHQ Next last month! Nearly 1,300 attendees joined us in person and virtually. The sessions were outstanding. Some were standing room only. We didn’t anticipate the levels of interest for some of the sessions and have noted that for next year.
Celebrating Healthcare Quality Week, October 15-21
Healthcare quality professionals serve in important roles within organizations. While their work is critical for improving outcomes, increasing efficiencies, and reducing costs, healthcare quality professionals go unnoticed because they often work behind the scenes. The National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) is leading efforts to bring great recognition for the impactful contributions these professionals make across the country and the world. Healthcare Quality Week (HQW) is designed to celebrate healthcare quality professionals and to show appreciation for their good work. This year, the week takes place October 15-21.
September Message from Leadership
In just a few days, more than 800 of us will convene in Cincinnati for NAHQ Next and about 500 will be joining virtually! I’m excited to be among our healthcare quality community where we can catch up with colleagues and make new connections, all while fulfilling our commitment to lifelong learning.
Our thoughts are with those who continue to recover from the aftermath of Hurricane Harvey and those impacted by Hurricane Irma. NAHQ has donated to the American Red Cross to support those experiencing these devastating events.

National Association for Healthcare Quality Wins “2017 Power of A Gold Award”
The National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) was honored with the 2017 Power of A Gold Award for its HQ Essentials resource, which ensures healthcare quality professionals are well prepared to serve and lead in the quality roles of today and tomorrow.
HQ Essentials Receives Prestigious Award
Recently, NAHQ was named a proud recipient of a 2017 The Power of A Gold Award for HQ Essentials: Competencies for the Healthcare Quality Profession. The award, presented by the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE), is the industry’s highest honor, recognizing organizations for their valuable contributions in solving problems, advancing industry performance, and improving conditions on local, national, and global levels.
Healthcare quality professionals work in every healthcare setting to enhance care delivery, optimize value, and improve outcomes. For those of you who serve in this role or work with someone who does, you’re familiar with the important work being done every day. However, you’ll come across some people (even in your own organizations) who don’t understand your work or the profession.
Every so often we get a chance to sit back and reflect on the work we do and why we do it. Sometimes those reflections come when we’re sitting at our desk or in our car. And, sometimes they occur as part of a larger experience such as NAHQ Next, which takes place September 18-20. I’m looking forward to spending time at NAHQ Next to reflect on the progress we’ve made as a profession and to talk with many of you about why we do this work.
NAHQ is bringing quality training to nursing homes this summer: HQ Principles for Nursing Home Professionals!
NAHQ worked with the QIN-QIO to develop a training program for nursing home staff and executive coaching for nursing home administrators. More than 220 certificates of completion were granted to nursing home professionals in Illinois and Iowa through the pilot program.
A few months ago, I told you about some of the improvements we’ve made at NAHQ that help our members and customers stay up to date on the latest healthcare quality news and resources available to them. We’ve seen our reach expand each month from increased visits to our website, larger audiences tuning in to Learning Labs, and growing readership for our eNews.
NAHQ is dedicated to supporting a coordinated and competent workforce of healthcare quality professionals. And, as healthcare evolves quickly, more and more quality professionals are trusting NAHQ as the go-to resource to teach, certify, and define healthcare quality.
In late February, NAHQ hosted nearly 40 quality professionals who volunteered their time at our headquarters in Chicago to discuss the most pressing issues that healthcare quality professionals face today. The level of engagement and passion expressed by these individuals is the reason why NAHQ is succeeding.
At NAHQ, we're proud to provide healthcare quality professionals with content, resources, and tools that expand knowledge and skills in the competency areas needed to advance quality.
During Patient Safety Awareness Week, the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF) issued a Call to Action: Preventable Health Care Harm Is a Public Health Crisis and Patient Safety Requires a Coordinated Public Health Response. The Call to Action outlines how a public health approach can bring about widespread advances in patient safety and provides a public health framework to reduce harm to patients and the workforce.
As healthcare quality professionals, we’re always looking for the next improvement opportunity. It’s part of our nature. NAHQ is improving too and those improvements are becoming visible to our members and customers.
