This session will present an overview of leveraging technologies and big data analytics in healthcare organizations and introduce best practices in healthcare management.
Sam King, MPH, MBA, CPHIMS, CPHQ, CHFP, FHIMSS, FHFMA, is a seasoned healthcare executive, faculty, and consultant with 30 years of experience in health IT, healthcare finance, big data analytics, artificial intelligence, and continuous quality improvement. His leadership roles included COO, CIO, VP of Analytics, Senior Director, and Director of Medical/Healthcare Informatics. He is a faculty at UC Irvine and USC Price School of Public Policy.
Currently, Sam is the Chief Information and Innovation Officer for a healthcare startup. He serves on Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) National Advisory Council and President-elect of HFMA Southern California Chapter. He served on HFMA National Board of Examiners, National CHFP Exam Standard Setting Committee, and Region 11 Education Committee Chair. He served as President of Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) Southern California Chapter, Chair of the HIMSS National Chapters Task Force, and on HIMSS National Davies Committee on the use of HIT and EHRs.
He received HFMA Follmer Bronze, Reeves Silver, Muncie Gold, and Founders Medal of Honor awards, as well as three Yerger Special Recognition awards. He received the 2012 HIMSS National Chapter Leader of the Year Award. Under his presidency, HIMSS Southern California chapter received HIMSS National Chapter of the Year award in 2011. He is a frequent speaker and moderator at national and professional conferences addressing health IT and healthcare finance challenges facing our society. He provides training for healthcare leaders in the US and internationally. He is an executive mentor to UC Irvine business school students.

Prior to this role, Dr. Summerfelt was the Vice President of Research& Innovation at Advocate Health Care, where the team conducted clinical research aimed at improving patient and provider system outcomes. Dr. Summerfelt earned his PhD from Vanderbilt University and focused his doctoral and post-doctoral training on Health Services Research. He has held faculty appointments at Vanderbilt, Michigan State, and University of Chicago. His scholarly work focuses on effectiveness research, program evaluation, and value-based analysis.
Dr. Tracy R. Smith is Senior Clinical Manager at Abbott Nutrition. In her position, Dr. Smith is responsible for developing and executing programs to educate healthcare professionals and researchers about the science behind Abbott’s nutrition products and the health economic impact of nutrition intervention. She has presented numerous domestic and international continuing education programs and educational lectures related to the role of nutrition in the changing healthcare environment, and clinical topics related to muscle health, malnutrition, and health outcomes. She started her career as a scientist at Abbott Nutrition in 2002 and has worked in Research and Development, Abbott Nutrition Health Institute, Therapeutic Nutrition Marketing and Strategic Sales Marketing and Strategic Sales.
Series Overview: This two-part webinar series is an introduction to the peer review process for new reviewers and a refresh for those who might already be peer reviewers. In the first session, the peer review process is described and instructions for using the Journal for Healthcare Quality Editorial Manager are provided. In the second session, reviewers are guided through a systematic approach to reviewing manuscripts to provide meaningful feedback to authors and editors. Sign up for just one session, or attend both! Session One: Introduction to Peer Review

Session 1 Summary: Peer review is an important part of the publication process. Submitted manuscripts are reviewed by subject matter experts to ensure the quality and accuracy of the reported study. This first session describes the peer review process for the Journal for Healthcare Quality and provide an overview of the Editorial Manager system that’s used to submit and review manuscripts.
By the end of the session, the learner will be able to:
- Describe theJHQpeer review process.
- Understand the basic components of the peer review process including evaluation of the work presented in the manuscript (e.g., purpose, methods, and results).
- Describe theJHQEditorial Manager process used by peer reviewers.
Maria R. Shirey, PhD MBA RN NEA-BC ANEF FACHE FAAN is Editor-in-Chief of the Journal for Healthcare Quality. In her extensive career, she has held a variety of positions including bedside critical care nurse, nursing director, and hospital vice president. As an educator, researcher, and practitioner, Dr. Shirey’s work has focused on building leadership capacity for quality and safety. She currently serves as Professor and Chair of the Acute, Chronic and Continuing Care Department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Nursing. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Florida State University, a Master of Science in Nursing from Texas Woman’s University, a Master of Business Administration from Tulane University, and a PhD in Nursing Science from Indiana University. She is board certified in advanced nurse executive practice and health care management. She is also a Fellow in the American College of Healthcare Executives, American Academy of Nursing, and the Academy of Nursing Education.
Rebecca S. Miltner, PhD, RN, CNL, NEA-BC is Associate Professor University Alabama Birmingham and Associate Editor, Journal for Healthcare Quality. Dr. Suzie Miltner joined UAB in 2012. She is also a Nurse Scientist at the Birmingham VA Medical Center. She has extensive clinical and leadership experience in military, private, and VA acute care settings as well as well as experience in nursing education in both academic and organizational settings. She has been a leader in driving quality improvement efforts in several health care organizations including ongoing work as a facilitator for VA improvement teams. Her interests include Improvement science, survey methods, quality of nursing care in acute care settings especially related to hospital acquired conditions such as pressure ulcers, immobility, and falls, practice variation in bedside nursing, and quality measurement.
Aquila Blackwell, BS MA is the Managing Editor for J&J Editorial, LLC and is an active member of the International Society for Managing and Technical Editors (ISMTE). She graduated from Eastern Michigan University, with a B.S. in Literature, Language, and Writing and a M.A. in English Literature.
Session Two: Peer Review Process & Outcomes

Session 2 Summary: Peer review is an important part of the publication process. This second session of this series focuses on the role of the peer reviewer in the systematic process for the meaningful review of manuscripts.
The webinar will tackle questions that are considered in peer review like:
- Is the paper well-written and up-to-date with the existing body of knowledge on the topic?
- Does the work make a significant contribution to the field?
- Does the paper present interesting or novel ideas?
- Is the research likely to impact practice or discussion in the discipline?
By the end of the session, the learner will be able to:
- Explain what it means to conduct effective peer review for aJHQmanuscript.
- Provide written, impartial feedback in a timely manner based on the merits of the work and how a manuscript is accepted (as is, minor revisions, major revisions) or rejected.
- Document his or her viewpoints about the originality, design, methods,resultsand conclusions presented in a manuscript.
- Indicate the relevancy of the work in advancing the science and practice of healthcare quality.

Cathy E. Duquette, Ph.D., RN, NEA-BC, CPHQ, FNAHQ is executive vice president for nursing affairs for Lifespan Since 2010, she has served on the editorial board of the Journal for Healthcare Quality, holding the role of associate editor since 2014. In her vice president role, she is responsible for co-leading the system strategy for quality, patient safety and patient experience with her physician colleague, the executive vice president for physician affairs, as well as leading nursing and the organization’s efforts to implement lean and six sigma across the health system. Since 2006, Dr. Duquette has served as an appraiser for the Magnet Recognition Program. Her more than 30 years in healthcare includes roles as senior vice president and chief quality officer of Rhode Island Hospital, vice president of nursing and patient care services and chief nursing officer at Newport Hospital, senior vice president at the Hospital Association of Rhode Island, and staff roles in hospital quality improvement and clinical nursing in the critical care setting. She received Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees in nursing from the University of Rhode Island and a Ph.D. in Nursing from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and Worcester. She holds certification as a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality through the National Association for Healthcare Quality and is board certified as a Nursing Executive, Advanced through the American Nurses Credentialing Center. She was also certified as a six sigma black belt in 2014. She is an active member of the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) and was inducted as a NAHQ Fellow in 2013, a status of recognition for NAHQ members who have made outstanding contributions to the healthcare quality profession. She has also served on state and national task forces involving leadership development, hospital performance measurement, quality improvement, public reporting, and nursing workforce.
