Welcome to the web site for the Certified
Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) Program
The granting
of CPHQ status recognizes professional and academic achievement by individuals
in the field of healthcare quality management. The comprehensive
body of knowledge includes quality management, quality improvement,
case/care/disease/utilization management, and risk management at all
employment levels and in all healthcare settings. The CPHQ
program is fully accredited by the National Commission for Certifying
Agencies of the National Organization for Competency Assurance in Washington,
D.C. It is the only international voluntary certification program
in the field of healthcare quality management to achieve this accreditation.
Since the first examination was administered
by the HQCB in 1984, more than 15,000 professionals from a wide variety
of educational and employment backgrounds have registered for the CPHQ
examination, with more than 11,000 achieving certified status. There
are currently over 6,800 active CPHQs in the United States and worldwide.

Greetings! And WELCOME to the Healthcare Quality Certification Board (HQCB) website. On behalf of the Board of Directors and staff, I would like to express our warmest welcome and thank-you for your interest in certification as a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ). We hope you will find this website informative in regards to helping you achieve your healthcare quality certification and/or re-certification objectives.
If you are new to healthcare quality certification, you may be interested in the following tips:
- Use this website and tools to help you prepare for the examination. The candidate handbook is an essential place to begin your journey and offers answers to all your examination and application questions. Just click on the CPHQ Exam Link and then the Candidate Handbook.
- There are more than 130 testing center locations where you can take your computer-based healthcare quality certification examination. In addition we are excited to announce that the exam will again be offered immediately prior to the annual National Association of Healthcare Quality (NAHQ) conference. The conference will be held in Nashville, Tennessee, September 30 – October 3, 2010.
- You may be interested in looking at the Self-Assessment Exam (SAE) for additional preparation. The SAE questions are an online exam that was developed to be parallel in content and difficulty to the actual CPHQ examination. It is a tool that can help you assess if you are ready for the actual examination.
If you are already certified, you may be interested in the following tips:
- Recertification: KEEP TRACK ON-LINE! Check out the website (click on Recertification Link) and post your CEU’s in ‘your’ on-line file until you are ready to recertify. It is a great way to keep your CEU’s together and organized. When you are ready to recertify it’s just a couple clicks, payment and you’re done.
- Recertification Options: Remember that all continuing education must relate to areas covered in the most current examination content outline.
- Be sure to look into NAHQ’s annual conference for continuing education. In addition, there are also many other avenues to achieve your 30 CEU’s in your two year recertification cycle, a few way to recertify include: seminar attendance, self-study, submission of draft questions, speaking engagements and formal publication of articles or books. This information is outlined under the Recertification tab.
